Surprise Findings On
Data Salaries

173tech’s Data Salary Review offers data professionals key insights into salary trends, market demand, and emerging skill gaps, helping them navigate career growth and compensation expectations with confidence. We scraped data from 23 tech hubs from across Europe and the Americas to find, well, some quite unexpected results!

All Data Roles Are The Same

Average Salaries By Job Role

From The United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, France and The Netherlands

It sounds a little crazy, but the major trend we have seen around the world is a lack of specialisation. In terms of roles, responsibility and salaries, data professionals are expected to know each element of the data pipeline inside and out. If we look at 2020, the gap between average Data Scientist salaries and Data Analysts was 53.37% , fast forward to 2024 and that gap has closed to 29.39%This is because responsibilities are growing fuzzier.

Data analysts have seen a significant wage increase in most tech hubs we evaluated, but this is because of growing expectations on them to implement machine learning or AI elements which would traditionally be the remit of Data Scientists.  Data Scientists are increasingly being asked to implement data pipelines, the remit of Data Engineers who themselves are being asked to take on more modelling.

While specialisation still exists, increasingly these roles are only found at larger organisations and as more scale-ups look to leverage data, professionals have greater expectations on their shoulders.

Data professionals have always been in high demand and commanded large wages and now it seems employers are looking to get more for their money and general knowledge may become more important in the years to come.

More small and medium sized businesses want to adopt data but cannot afford a full team. Will the talent market adjust to their needs or the other way around?

America Is No Longer The Promised Land

Average Wage Growth % Comparing 2020 to 2024

From The United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, France and The Netherlands

When most people think of tech hubs, it’s hard not to think of America and San Francisco in particular. But the data reveals a more complex pictureWhilst wages in New York and California are some of the highest, wage growth has been sluggish over the last four years and only Richmond ranks in the top 5. (For Data Scientists) Tech Hubs in America are also noticeably more volatile than others, with bigger peaks and troughs depending on the market. That means losing your job at the wrong time could mean a significant pay decrease. The job market is more saturated than other tech hubs and therefore more competitive. It is also worth noting that for new talent entering the market, America has a bad combination in that the places with the most opportunities , New York and California are also some of the most expensive. New York, Richmond and California all feature on the top 6 worst take-home pay for Data Analysts after average cost of living is deduced. Whilst America still has many exciting opportunities, it may not be the magnet it once was going forward and that global competition can only be a good thing.

In some ways the rest of the world is catching up to America when it comes to data maturity and so competition for talent will increase.

Where You Live Might Not Matter

Traditionally, living in a major city came with a higher cost of living, but it also provided greater job opportunities and better wages to compensate. However, the pandemic significantly disrupted this dynamic. As remote work became widespread, many professionals left expensive urban centres for more affordable locations, seeking a better quality of life. This shift led to rising demand in smaller cities and suburban areas, driving up housing costs and other living expenses. At the same time, businesses had to adjust wages in response to shifting labour markets, leading to an overall increase in salaries in regions that were previously more affordable.

As a result, the wage gap between different parts of the same country has narrowed compared to pre-pandemic levels. Remote work remains a strong trend, enabling workers to live in areas with lower costs while still earning competitive salaries. A notable example of this shift can be seen in the United States, where cities like Austin and Nashville have experienced surging populations and rising costs, closing the gap with historically more expensive locations like New York and San Francisco. If remote work continues to be the norm, this trend may persist, fundamentally reshaping the relationship between location, wages, and the cost of living.

Demand Continues To Outstrip Supply

Since 2016, the demand for data talent has consistently outpaced supply. The global data science job market is expected to grow by 36% between 2021 and 2031, yet employers are making hiring even more challenging by setting increasingly high expectations for data professionals. With companies often seeking candidates skilled in everything from analytics and engineering to strategy and AI, the talent gap continues to widen.

This talent shortage directly slows data adoption, preventing businesses from fully leveraging their data. Instead of struggling to build an in-house team, companies can benefit from partnering with a data agency like 173tech. We provide a flexible, cost-effective alternative to hiring a full data team, giving businesses access to expert data support on demand.
