Our Thoughts On AI

Our Predictions:
Artificial Intelligence

Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most transformative technologies of our time, with the potential to reshape industries, economies, and societies in profound ways. As AI continues to evolve it is natural to wonder what impact it will have on our jobs, our daily lives, and our future…

Enhancing, Not Replacing Jobs

The idea that AI will lead to mass unemployment is a common concern, but it is one that may be overstated, especially in the near future. AI’s current capabilities are impressive, but they are still largely complementary to human work rather than substitutive. In other words, AI is more likely to enhance our jobs than to eliminate them.

To understand how AI might change our work, it is helpful to look back at another technological revolution: the rise of search engines, particularly Google. Before search engines, accessing knowledge required significant effort—whether it was looking through books, consulting experts, or conducting original research. Google changed all that by making information instantly accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

Initially, people were sheepishly admitting that they had “Googled” something instead of knowing it outright. However, as the technology became more reliable and ubiquitous, it became an accepted and even expected part of everyday life. Today, we rarely think twice about turning to Google for answers, and this shift has fundamentally changed how we approach learning and problem-solving.

A similar evolution is happening with AI, particularly with tools like ChatGPT, people are increasingly turning to AI to help with writing, research, customer service, and even decision-making.

The Foundations of AI

For AI to be effective, it requires vast amounts of data—specifically, structured and high-quality data. This data serves as the foundation upon which AI models are built. Companies like OpenAI, which developed models like ChatGPT, have done much of the heavy lifting by creating sophisticated AI systems that can be tailored to specific business needs. A generic AI model is a good starting point, but to fully realise its potential, businesses need to tailor these models to their specific needs, using data that is unique to their operations. This customisation process ensures that the AI aligns with the company’s goals, understands its context, and delivers insights that are directly relevant but is first reliant on modelled data. The hard truth for most companies is that they simply cannot leverage AI until they have matured their current data infrastructure.

A Gradual Revolution

AI is not going to progress at an exponential rate overnight. Instead, it is likely to continue evolving gradually, with incremental improvements that make it increasingly useful over time.

The idea of AI fully replacing human brains is a science fiction scenario that, if it ever comes to pass, is still many years away.

In the meantime, businesses and individuals will continue to rely on human intelligence, creativity, and problem-solving skills, with AI serving as a powerful assistant rather than a replacement. The gradual nature of AI’s progress means that we will have time to adapt, learn, and integrate AI into our workflows in ways that enhance, rather than diminish, our roles.

Conclusion

While AI is certainly exciting, it should serve as a wakeup call for many organisations. Data infrastructure is hardly new and yet many small and medium sized businesses are lagging behind, and not optimising their business based on hard data. There will definitely be a strategic advantage in leveraging AI but only if you are ready to optimise towards your specific use case.
